VACUUM

VACUUM

The vacuum, only one out of a collection of similarly purposed tools, was a common household item designed to collect debri and residue from surfaces. While it specialized in the removal of debri from ground and floor surfaces, in some cases, the vacuum was manufactured to include attachments for other purposes. The vacuum utilized fan generated pressure changes to suction dirt, dust, and other particles, funneling them into an internal chamber which then required periodic emptying. The vacuuming process was notoriously accompanied by an irritatingly loud sound.

LAUNDRY

LAUNDRY

Physical clothing would accumulate grime, dirt, and other filth both from its surrounding and from the wearer’s body. This was removed through immersion in water and soap by hand until the introduction of the washing machine. This machine allowed for the cleansing of a high volume of clothing due to the large size of its drum and the efficiency of its cleaning method. The entire inner chamber rotated while dousing the clothing with hot water and liquid soap which was then removed through the inertia created by an extremely fast rotation cycle. This massive machine was accompanied by a similarly sized dryer which combined rotation and hot air to remove any moisture remaining in the clothing.

TRASH CAN

TRASH CAN

Large containers of this sort were commonplace in both public and private spaces. Trash cans, sometimes referred to as rubbish or garbage, were used to collect physical waste generated by the consumption of goods. They were found almost everywhere, including in households, on street corners, and in parks. The placing or dispersing of waste outside of designated Trash Cans in public areas, or “littering”, could often result in a fine. Trash cans were frequently accompanied by recycling bins, containers for specific types of waste such as plastic, paper, and glass. Recycling, as this process was referred to, was often used to create the illusion of individual participation in the fight against climate change.

MEDICATION

MEDICATION

The human body had a great variety of faults and issues. Specialists known as “doctors” maintained the bodies of the rest of the population, but in many cases, this maintenance was insufficient. Doctors would rely on giving patients medication which came in the form of small tablets or capsules. Medication employed a vast variety of methods in order to prevent, treat, and cure many ailments. Unfortunately, the price of medication and other treatments was inaccessible to those who couldn’t afford to purchase something known as healthcare.

MODEM

MODEM

Prior to the melding of the metaverse and consciousness, individuals would experience stalls in connection to the internet which were caused by location, overall increased usage, or outdated technology. The common solution would be disconnecting and reconnecting the source of wireless connection in an area known as the router. An infamous symbol representative of this stalling was a spinning wheel.

SWITCH

SWITCH

Human control over environmental factors was extremely limited, something demonstrated by the light switch. Before the capabilities of speech and thought control, the lighting of an area was determined by the position of a small switch, usually located on a nearby wall. Users were required to achieve physical proximity to the light switch in order to change its position. Commonly, the downward position signified the ‘off’ status of a light, while the upward position signified the ‘on’ status. Later, light switches would provide slightly more control with dimming and color changing features.

ANALOG CLOCK

ANALOG CLOCK

The clock was a simple time-telling device that could be found in almost every public and private physical space. Relying on an internal structure of gears and pinions, the clock would indicate the time using a set of two or three pointers, the longest and thinnest representing the second value, the next longest representing the minute value, and the shortest representing the hour value. Clocks of this variety required manual setting, a tedious process of dial turning that would occur upon purchase, in the case of damage, and biannually during an agricultural ritual known as “daylight savings”.

BLENDER

BLENDER

While we now enjoy the luxury of a pre-liquified nutrient supply, a blender used to be a requirement for condensing solid foods. The blender utilized a set of sharp blades attached to a high-speed motor that sliced food into small particles, effectively combining anything within its chamber. While this may seem like a dangerous tool to possess as a fragile human, blenders were often found in most households, and they were often made to create drinks that humans considered healthy.
